Meebo Repeater is a software download for people who want to chat safely when their IM access is restricted.
Just install the repeater on a computer that can access the Web freely, and then use that computer to bounce the signal to Meebo. It's simple and secure.
For various reasons, there are cases where access to Meebo is restricted. Some Meebo users have employed third-party proxies as a creative solution to this problem, and this caused us to worry a bit. Proxies are ripe for phishing attacks, significantly increasing the chances of an unknown agent sniffing your conversations or stealing your passwords. Reliability is questionable and privacy becomes a major concern. Proxy technology can be abused in ways that compromise the security of your session.
So we tried to come up with alternatives to this third-party proxy solution, and the "Meebo Repeater" was born. This simple software download (which was built on open source and is being released as open source) "bounces" your Web traffic from one computer to another, and finally to Meebo's servers.
We're releasing this experimental project to increase security for those who access Meebo through a third-party host. It's SSL-enabled by default and we hope people will stop using potentially dangerous proxies to access Meebo. As with anything, we strongly urge everyone to use it responsibly and with discretion.
